The Ultimate Back-to-Dance Checklist
August is officially here, which means the countdown to a brand-new dance season is on! Whether you are a parent trying to get your tiny dancer organized or an advanced student stepping up your training this year, getting back into the swing of things takes a little preparation.
There is nothing worse than arriving at the studio for your first week of classes only to realize you forgot your bobby pins, your jazz shoes are worn out, or your leotard is a size too small.
To help you start the season with total confidence, we’ve put together the ultimate back-to-dance checklist. Grab your dance bag, lay everything out, and let’s make sure you’re fully prepped to hit the floor!
1. The Shoe & Apparel Audit (Do they still fit?)
Kids have a habit of doing most of their growing over the summer months. Before you pack last year's gear, have a try-on session at home.
The Fit Test: Put on ballet, tap, or jazz shoes and check the toes. If they are curling or pinching, it's time for an upgrade.
Check for Wear and Tear: Look at the elastic straps on ballet shoes, check the screws and buckles on tap shoes, and ensure there are no holes in the soles of jazz shoes.
Dancewear: Confirm the dress code for your dancer’s class. Ensure that you have leotards that fit and tights without holes or runs.
2. The Back-to-Dance Checklist
The Core Gear
All Required Dance Shoes: (Labeled on the inside with your dancer's initials!)
Fresh Tights: Always keep a brand-new, backup pair of tights in your bag in case of unexpected snags or runs.
Warm-ups: A light pant, knit shorts, or a crossover sweater to keep muscles warm during the initial stretch.
The Ultimate "Bun Kit" Emergency Pack
Toss these into a small cosmetic zipper pouch inside your dance bag so they don't get lost at the bottom:
Hair Elastics: Strong hair ties matching your hair color.
Bobby Pins & Hairpins: Lots of them. (They somehow always disappear!)
Hairspray or Gel: To slick back flyaways so you can focus on your turns, not your hair.
Brush/Comb: For quick transitions between school hair and dance hair.
Fuel & Personal Care
Insulated Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is critical. Bring a large, reusable bottle (no single-use plastic caps that can pop off and spill on the dance floor).
Quick-Energy Snacks: Think clean and non-messy. Apple slices, rice cakes, or protein bars are perfect. Avoid crumbly crackers or anything with sticky chocolate.
Deodorant & Body Wipes: A must-have for dancers heading straight from a long school day into a high-energy jazz or hip-hop class.
Band-Aids & Athletic Tape: For preventing or treating the occasional blister during those first few weeks of breaking in fresh shoes.
3. A Few Pro-Tips for Parents
Separate Your Bags: Try to keep your dance bag strictly for dance. Combining school books, gym clothes, and dance gear usually leads to misplaced shoes and forgotten leotards.
Label Everything: Seriously, everything! When twenty dancers take off identical black tap shoes at the end of class, having your child’s name written on the inside arch prevents accidental switch-ups.
Check the Calendar: Before the first week of classes, double-check your class times, and our studio drop-off/pick-up traffic flow rules. Arriving 10 minutes early kills the rush-hour stress!
